You can increase how well you are liked by doing various things in the villages like trading or even using your own items to upgrade a villager's job site area or something like that. You could take over other territories and make them your subjects. Essentially, you could have territory wars that you participate in. I've always imagined creating your own villages and then going to war with other villages. Imo I think villagers would be a ton better with better AI.
